The most important element of an aquarium is its transparent shell. A strong, rigid and durable tank is something that is very important for any aquarium. May it be a small home aquarium or the gigantic aquarium at the Dubai Mall.

Globally, the two most common materials used to construct aquarium tanks are Glass and Acrylic. Glass is a material that man has known since ages. It is a very versatile material. From wine glasses to the windows of your bedroom, all are made from glass. However, with time, man also has clarity about the limitations with glass. Characteristics of glass like heaviness, delicacy are little bit inconvenient for the large public aquarium.

When it comes to aquarium, glass is still widely used. Over 80% of aquariums still made from glass for factors like its reasonable price, ease of availability and simple bonding processes.

Nevertheless, when we are talking about aquariums that are very massive and have dimensions beyond imagination, Acrylic comes into picture.

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the chemical name  for this polymer, which is commonly known as acrylic. Acrylic is a strong, non-brittle and ultra clear plastic with superb transparency. Light transmittance experiments carried on acrylic and glass sheets of same thickness prove that acrylic is up to 8 times more transparent than glass !!

The main advantage that acrylic has over glass is that it can be manufactured in any imaginable size. Yes..!! Two separate pieces of acrylic can be bonded together to form one single seamless piece, making the joint absolutely invisible! It is only by this technology, that the largest aquariums in the world like the one in Okinawa, Japan and the one at the Dubai mall have become a reality.

Matsyam has recently collaborated with Jiaxing mirror plastic company in order to cater the requirement for cast acrylic panels in India. These can be used as aquarium viewing panels or can be used for any specialized architectural or structural requirement.

So……don’t be surprized to see some really big and very mesmerizing aquariums near you very soon!
